About American Legion Post 653 — The Last Outpost
American Legion Post 653 serves Terlingua, Study Butte, and the surrounding Big Bend community. Known as The Last Outpost, our post is committed to supporting veterans, military families, youth, patriotism, service, and fellowship.
Post 653 is a place where veterans, members, families, and community supporters can gather, serve, volunteer, and stay connected to something larger than themselves.
Serving Veterans and the Big Bend Community
Post 653 works to support the mission of The American Legion at the local level. Our members help carry forward the values of service, citizenship, remembrance, mutual support, and commitment to community.
In a remote area like Terlingua and the Big Bend, community matters. Post 653 exists to help provide a reliable gathering place, a veteran-led service organization, and a way for people to support veterans, families, youth, and local events.

Part of The American Legion
The American Legion was founded in 1919 and has grown into one of the nation’s leading veterans service organizations.
Post 653 carries that mission forward locally through The American Legion’s traditional pillars of service:
Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation
National Security
Americanism
Children & Youth
These pillars guide the work of American Legion posts across the country, including our service here in the Terlingua / Big Bend area.
The American Legion Family
Post 653 is also supported by the wider American Legion Family, including Sons of The American Legion Squadron 653 and community supporters who help strengthen the post and its mission.
Together, we work to preserve the post, support veterans, serve the community, and keep The Last Outpost active for future generations.
